Blake's is a chain of 75 hamburger shops in New Mexico that has been in business for decades. Many locations feature massive statues of the founder dressed like Uncle Sam and holding a marquee sign. Many of the marquees hadn't been changed in years when Smugglers' inn, the partnership I have with art director, Carol Henderson, convinced Blake's to surrender this space to us.
We wrote the kind of messages that we could imagine coming from a giant with the face of George W. Bush and legs made out of steel pipes. We replaced, "NEW BLUEBERRY SHAKE" with "PLEASE STOP -- I NEED SHOES." and "EGG MUFFIN 99 CENTS" WITH "I SEE HUNGRY PEOPLE ". We had about 20 different sayings that alternated between the stores. A cult campaign for a cult burger.
